Starting Out A Homeschool Co-Ops
Let's Get Started!
If you know a couple of families who might be fascinated in a homeschool co-op, the next step is to have a brainstorming meeting to talk about the choices. Remember it is better to start small. It is easy to be overwhelmed, therefore keep the size of the co-op small in the beginning.
Now is the time to talk about the classes which will be offered. The possibilities are virtually endless. A lot of co-ops are organized around a style. Consider curriculum that might be helpful and read homeschool curriculum reviews. Determine what classes parents are interested in teaching. Here's just a sampling of ideas:

Once the classes have been decided upon, the schedule may be drawn up. Expenses can be discussed and other miscellaneous topics. Usually, it is nice to have someone represent as a coordinator.
Some other Considerations:
Ideally, have someone to look after the younger kids while the moms are teaching. We have often had someone teach a pre-school class that coincides with the any other classes, particularly while those moms are teaching.
Decide beforehand on a standard of behavior for children in class. It often helps if a parent can be there, but the teacher should feel free to calm down noisy children. Undoubtedly, the parents/teachers should never treat the children in a demeaning way. Being open and honest as well as resolving issues promptly usually will go a long way in keeping up good relationships.
Occasionally it may become necessary for a co-op to split when the interests change or whenever families have different expectations. This is an essential catalyst for growth.
Co-op Experiences
Our first co-op experience started when my oldest daughter took part in a biology co-op that met once a week. This was for high school age students and all I had to do was pay a fee and drop her off. She learned a lot there and it brought on an area of interest for her. She decided then that she wanted to be a nurse and she will complete her nursing degree in 6 months.
The first co-op that I helped coordinate was focused on a science unit study. We all had younger kids and wanted to give them a hands on exposure to science that none of us seemed to be doing at home. We checked out many homeschool curriculum reviews before deciding on the curriculum we would utilize. Our class met for several hours once a week and then we had lunch and play time. The kids loved it, and the parents noticed they were also fulfilling their own need for encouragement and support.
As our children grew we began to increase, adding in a history class as well as a Five in a Row read aloud time. At one time we were lucky to have a talented artist, who helped bring out the artist in all the kids. Guest speakers, who spoke on different topics and provided demonstrations, were a nice addition to our co-op.
At the present time, our co-op offers 3 classes; a history class that is taught chronologically, a writing class as well as a literature class that both coordinate with the history.
