Smallish Pooch Training

The reason why dog lovers possess this preconceived belief that small dogs are more challenging to discipline than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to comprehend. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be a problem.

Small dog training, is in no way different from training a pup of any other larger sized breed. While training any dog will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, most all other elements remain the same, and the approach to training the pup should not be different, regardless its size.

Having said that, I will stray from the rule here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may pose difficulties in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the size of the breed is small, but in every instance, because of the owner.

If a smaller breed puppy is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a smallish breed puppy cannot be toilet trained or poses difficulties in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unknowingly contributed to this problem. Let us analyze how and why.

Aggression.

Small dogs are enjoyed because they are sweet, they are like toys. Owners take pleasure in having their pet sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the difficulty begins. The basic aggressive trait of the puppy, is to take ownership over its domain, its food, even its leader; all canines want to be the alpha dog.

It is the hostile streak in the dog that provokes it to climb on to the lap of its mistress, specially when there are a number of individuals gathered in the room.

This is a blatant act of violence. Instead of chastising and checking the pup, every owner bar no one, would hug the puppy, although it jumped on to their lap uninvited, developing the aggressive streak in the animal. By doing this the owner has given into the pup's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting upset at a much bigger dog is another blatant act of hostility. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is looked on as cute, just because one dog is small while the other is large. Most owners cuddle the pup instead of scolding it, when it demonstrates this aggression to a larger dog.

The above are but examples as to why small breed pet dogs are aggressive, and not because small dog training is complicated.

Potty Training.

Owners tend to carry their small pets around no matter where they are, even at home and that makes it practically impossible to house break them

It is, as if by instinct that the owners of miniature breed dogs to lug the animal to the spot where the dog should eliminate itself and then carry it back into the house.

It is this habit of carrying the pooch to its toilet place that is the root of all complications. In addition, ever since the pup is normally carried around all the time it has no way of it informing or alerting the owner that it has to go the toilet.

Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other medium sized or larger sized dog. They have to be shown their bathroom area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their tiny breed dogs they would be very successful in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most interesting part of dog training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
