Abusive Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Wife, And Motivation For Helpful Change

It took quite a few years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had it with her husband's hazardous drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking instead of spending quality time with her and their two daughters. She was also tired of the second DWI Keith recently got. Additionally she was fed up from manufacturing explanations for her spouse when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his abusive drinking.

Not only this but she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking. And finally she was drained from the risky financial predicament into which he had placed his family due to his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.

One Wednesday evening when Sarah was reflecting on what she could do about her husband's unhealthy and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something positive to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked online under "alcohol treatment" and discovered more than a few rehab centers that were all located less than 20 miles away from where she and her husband lived.

When Sarah called each rehabilitation clinic she identified who she was and articulated that her husband was exhibiting hazardous and abusive drinking behavior. She also articulated that Keith had an excellent health insurance program at his place of employment and that outpatient or residential alcohol addiction treatment would be covered if a physician in the company health network suggested the rehabilitation.

After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's negative drinking, the healthcare professional in a supportive but firm manner explained to Sarah how she probably played a major part in her spouse's excessive and abusive drinking through the years. How? Essentially by rationalizing his drinking instead of letting him experience the consequences of his excessive and careless drinking behavior.

Stated more forcefully, the healthcare practitioner told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's careless drinking behavior. The healthcare professional also underlined the point that Sarah could not control Keith's behavior. With the support and guidance of the rehab team at the rehabilitation facility, however, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's unhealthy drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could go over his unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior with a doctor.

The good news was that after Sarah discussed this with Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been extremely worried about his harmful drinking behavior and that he was very relieved to know that Sarah wanted to do something productive about his abusive and careless drinking behavior. As a consequence, he made an appointment to see a counselor at the local alcohol rehabilitation center.

While simply calling a rehabilitation program does not guarantee that an individual's excessive and abusive drinking behavior will end or that a person will automatically be more willing to learning about alcohol abuse facts, calling for an appointment is undoubtedly an indispensable step in the rehabilitation process. And due to the fact that Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality treatment for his excessive and abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was greatly enhanced.
